Newsletter – September 2014

14 September 2014

The Summer Holiday is over and since the main event of the summer was the Scouts summer camp this will be a very Scout heavy newsletter. In other news the group is now on twitter. I can’t work technology to save my life but even I found the group easily, we are @1stlittlestoke and can be found using this link https://twitter.com/1stLittleStoke

Sections will be updating on there, most recently you can see the brave Scout who nominated Scout leader Rob Obee for the Ice Bucket challenge.

As always this newsletter is coming out with the Subs request, but can we also please have signed gift aid declarations for each child, it’s just a simple form but it helps us to keep the subs as low as possible. Please can you also make sure you have updated us if you have changed your address or phone number so we can keep our record up to date.

We would also like to ask if you can help the group in any way. We are always looking for additional helpers, even if you can’t make every week. We are also in dire need of parents to join the Executive Committee. There are usually 8 meetings of the Exec Committee a year and they are an easy way for you to help support our group. If there is any way you think you could help us contact our Assistant Group Scout Leader by emailing cmtbristol@tiscali.co.uk.

Despite the weather being against us, we would like to thank everyone who made our group Barbeque at then end of last term a success

Beavers – Coralie Thompson BSL/AGSL
At the end of last term the Beavers made the best of every opportunity to get out and enjoy the weather by doing the Outdoor Challenge Badge.
The highlight of the term was a fun day at Woodhouse Park. They tried the archery, caving, abseiling, zip wire, waterslides & loved the funfair & craft tent. They had a fantastic time & went home very tired.

Congratulations to the following Beavers who were awarded the Beaver of The Week Award – James Pearce, Louis Tremlin, Max Bailey, Eddie Ayshford, Harvey Linley & Ryan Donald.
Beaver of The Month Awards went to Louie Ash & James Hierons.
Points Challenge was won by RED LODGE Well done everyone.
This term the Beavers will be working towards their Global Challenge Badge, Health & Fitness Activity Badge & Photography Badge.

Cubs
Last term the cubs had a go at backwoods cooking, doing the athletics badge, having a go at Archery, a Geocache hike and also attended the fun day at Woodhouse Park.

To try and improve on the fun of last term Cubs have a lot to look forward to in the coming weeks. The Cubs are having a superhero themed Camp from 19th-21st September in Tintern where we will be getting the outdoor challenge badge and the hiking badge in a fun filled weekend. We are also going to bevisiting B and Q to do the DIY badge

Scouts
At the end of last term The Scouts attended a Sailing Regatta at Bristol Docks. A group of our Scouts took part in Canoeing, Sailing, Dragon Boat racing and pulling. A fun time was had by all but 6 hours on the water left the Scouts exhausted.

The Scout camp is always the main event in the group calendar for this time of year, and this year was no exception. The Scouts took part in a huge range of activities including hiking, a trip to the beach, a visit to the mumbles lifeboat station, splashing around in LC2 and a visit to Oakwood theme park. We also met a group of scouts from Germany and got to learn a lotabout the way scouting is run in Germany. I am told by parents that some Scouts are already looking forward to the summer camp next year so clearly it was a popular week with the Scouts.

On a different note Scouts will be taking over as much as possible in writing newsletters and our articles for the matters magazines as part of their Creative challenge badge, so keep an eye on our updates, the next matters magazine should be out in early October so give it a read and support the Scouts who are writing it.

Group Website
The group website is always worth a look, and for those of you that couldn’t find our twitter page there is a link on there. Our website can still be found following this link 1st Little Stoke.
